Korokoro recycling trial

New recycling bins were delivered to every Korokoro home in July as a trial to encourage recycling across the suburb.

What's the project about?

New recycling bins were delivered to every Korokoro home in July as part of a trial to encourage recycling across the suburb.

Flexinets, which prevent recycled items from blowing away for the green bins, were also delivered.

We're working on the trial with the help of the Korokoro Environmental Group. If successful, it may be repeated in other areas.

What's the duration of the project?

We looked at the overall composition of household rubbish across the suburb before the bins were distributed. We’ll be checking again early in 2012 to see if there is a positive change.

A survey of Korokoro household recycling habits was carried out in July 2011 and will be repeated again next year.

Outcomes of the project for the community

The Korokoro recycling bin trial aims to increase the amount we recycle and reduce the waste we take to the landfill.

We’re trying something in a small part of the city to see if it has potential right across Lower Hutt.

Where we see a positive change in Korokoro, the programme can be tweaked and be rolled out to all of Lower Hutt.

Which bin is used for what?

Your green bin is for paper, plastics and cardboard with your flexi-net to keep it blowing away.

Your black bin is for glass, tins and cans (heavier items).
