Lower Hutt District Plan
If you’re looking to find heritage buildings and structures in the area, these are all identified in the Lower Hutt District Plan, along with the rules that apply.
Historic Places Trust
If you’d like to know more, the Historic Places Trust also has a register and information on local buildings and structures.
Heritage trails
Take a trip down memory lane and try one of our heritage trails. There are several excellent booklets available to show you the way.
Where can I pick up a booklet?
Visit our information centre at 25 Laings Road – we have a handful of great booklets for you to choose from.
What heritage trails are there?
The extensive Petone heritage trail can be walked in about three hours. It starts at the Petone Railway Station on Hutt Road and passes nearly 50 landmarks, mostly along Jackson Street and the surrounding area.
Main features of the trail include:
- The site of Britannia, Wellington’s first settlement
- Petone Wharf
- Patrick Street workers’ settlement
- Settlers Museum
Two other discovery trails document heritage sites of both Wainuiomata and Eastbourne, and the historical stories of the townships are told in the brochures.
The New Zealand Historic Places Trust publishes a brochure called historic Hutt Valley which profiles 28 sites of historic importance throughout Hutt City and Upper Hutt. This is also available from our information centre.
Like the two discovery trails, this route is best taken by car.
