Latest News

There are 50 public playgrounds plus 2 co-shared playgrounds, located throughout the City. These playgrounds range in size and cater for a wide range of ability. They include destination playgrounds such as Avalon Park and localised community playgrounds, as in Arakura Park in Wainuiomata. All playgrounds either meet or exceed the New Zealand safety standard, NZS 5828 for playgrounds and are safe, fun and attractive environments. This does not eliminate the need for supervision of children on public play equipment. Playground upgrading continues yearly throughout the City to provide new fun and exciting challenges for children on an ongoing basis.

  • The teenager playground at Avalon Park was the first in the country to have this type of equipment.
  • The Dual Flying Fox at Parkway Family Playground complements the adventure style playground and fitness circuit. The dual nature of the Flying Fox allows children and adults to participate together, and race each other down the track.
  • The Rocktapus at Bishop Park is very popular with the 8-14 year olds, as is the huge slide.
  • The new spinning roundabouts at Te Whiti Grove, Korokoro, Te Whiti Park, Waiwhetu and Belmont Domain, Belmont can be used solo, and is very quick.
  • For the littlies there is even Council's version of Thomas the Tank Engine at the Waterloo Plunket Playground, Trafalgar Square, east side of Waterloo Rail Station.
  • Snakes and Ladder climber for the game children at Naenae Park Seddon Street.
  • The Spider at Speldhurst Park in Stokes Valley has a variety of play functions and climbing nets. It was recently complimented by the installation of a multi purpose sports cage where netball, basketball, hockey, soccer, skating can take place.
