Update May 2010
The Waiwhetu Stream is popular for its beautiful walkways and native bush. During periods of heavy rain sewer pipes in the area became overloaded and overflowed into the stream.
Now, after four years work and with 90% of the private drain upgrades completed, the likelihood of sewage overflows into the Waiwhetu Stream has been substantially reduced.
The upgrade programme has involved all parts of the system including: public mains, storage tanks, pump station management, improved flow monitoring, manholes, private drains and cross connection surveys.
This has been one of the most extensive, targeted infiltration reduction programmes carried out in New Zealand.
The upgrade of the private drains in the area has already prevented sewer overflows into the Waiwhetu Stream. Thank you for being part of this work and contributing to an improved environment in the area.
